Best 18 Inch Doll Furniture - Reviews and Buying Guide

My daughter first learned about American Girl Dolls in 2010 when we received a catalogue from the mail. She couldn't stop flipping through the pages and she also wouldn't stop begging me to get her one for Christmas. So, long story short, I finally gave in and got her one; she chose a "just like you" doll # 27. She totally love it and I have to admit, the doll got my attention too. The American Girl's whole line of dolls, furniture and accessories are just so adorable even for an adult like me. The quality of the doll is impeccable and most of them have stories that inspire and empower little girls.

So far, we have six American Girl Dolls in our collection and it has been a great bonding time for me and my daughter. We are currently in the process of building their doll house to accommodate all the furniture, clothes and accessories we have collected . So I thought I share with you some of the cute 18 inch doll furniture that we have purchased and some pretty finds that are on our wish list. So let's start shopping...

Our Generation Kitchen Play Set

The kitchen is where we started because my daughter already has her eye set on this kitchen set from Our Generation Dolls. It comes with a refrigerator, a microwave, stove, oven, dishwasher and sink. Little details of knobs , handles and doors that open well are just so entertaining. It has different types of food and all the possible kitchen accessories you can think of; pots and pans, utensils, pitcher, mixer, canisters and even a wireless phone. The color scheme and the layout of the whole ensemble is perfect. Everything looks amazing and it was all worth it. My daughter played with it non-stop.

This is my daughter's dolls' kitchen with the Our Generation set in the photo and McKenna (2012 AG Girl of the Year) . You can see how realistic the refrigerator is with all the shelves and tiny foods you can put inside. The freezer below also opens and comes with some pretend meat and ice cream. Please note that all not the food in the photo came with the set, some of them are additional items we bought from Amazon.

This table and chairs are another product from Our Generation dolls. We love how the colors blend with the whole theme of the room. Also in the photo is a cupboard with some China, a radio, a vase with flowers and some food on the table.

The bedroom is another exciting part of the doll house to decorate. For our dolls, we decided to get a bunk bed because it is a huge space saver. The bunk bed that we have is from Sophia's which is actually another well known brand for 18 inch dolls. It is very sturdy and well-crafted, I am totally in love with it. So far, we only have one of these so only 2 dolls get to sleep at a time, which is good because my daughter dutifully change her dolls into their sleepwear every night. If we get a bed for each one of them, she will have to do a lot of pajama changing .

Shelves or bookcases are great options for building a house for your 18 inch doll and can nicely accommodate the dolls , furniture and accessories for them. If you have a space in your house, get the widest and deepest one that can fit in that area so you have more room for expansion in the future. The shelf that we have is 14.5 inches in depth and 30 inches in width. If you want a wider shelf but can't find one, you can also put two different shelves side by side. I also suggest getting a white or birch color for the shelf rather than the black or mahogany ones so the doll's room will not look dark.

Decide on the theme that you want for the doll house first before you start working on it. Do you want it girly or whimsical perhaps or maybe country or Victorian if you collect historical dolls. This will give you more directions rather than random buying stuff that you see on the store or online.

You don't have to buy everything. Look around your house and find stuff that you can use to build furniture for your dolls. Cardboard, cereal boxes, shoe boxes, old towels perhaps and even popsicle and barbecue sticks. Youtube is a great place to find tutorials on do-it-yourself doll furniture.

Bathtub and shower accessories

For the bathroom, we chose to purchase this hot tub set from Our Generation Dolls. They are much cuter than the similar product being sold in the American Girl doll store. The set has more accessories such as make up brushes, nail polish, little canisters, bottles, shower cap, a dress towel and more. The flower details in the pink bathtub adds a girly touch. I would not recommend it though for girls 4 years old and below because of the tiny parts and accessories.

This is perhaps the most challenging room when attempting to build a complete doll house for your American Girl Dolls or other 18 inch dolls. For one, you need a big space to accommodate the couch and the stuff that comes with it such as the center table and the end tables. Also, there are other attractive furniture that you can add such as the American Girl grand piano or a settee which are both expensive. And for now, I can just dream of the parlor set complete with bookshelf, fireplace and window seat from Caroline's collection (American Girl Doll).

This is the lounge area with some stuff we bought from American Girl and Amazon. Most of the accessories here like the magazines, bulletin board and couch are made by my daughter herself.
